As one of it’s growth strands for this year is Imaginative Outreach to the local community, St. Ninian’s Pollokshields has done just that, using drama as the main tool.

St Ninian’s has a long association with drama.  As part of our Mission Action Plan, this has been further developed into a partnership with Renfrew and Aranthrue Theatrical Society (known affectionately as RATS).  Membership of the group is drawn from the original members of RATS and many members of the congregation, including the Director, Joyce Maxwell.  The annual programme consists of a pantomime in the church hall in December and a springtime dramatic production performed in The Tramway, which is next door to the church on Albert Drive.

The association with The Tramway goes back quite a way.  When the church was having major structural repairs, The Tramway offered the use of one of their theatres for our Sunday Eucharists.whisky_kisses

Recent performances have varied from plays like “Parking Lot in Pittsburgh” and “I didn’t always live here” to “The Boyfriend” and this month’s musical production of “Whisky Kisses”.

Now the drama theme has been extended to the children in the church and to children in the local community through a new partnership project with local Govanhill charity GoFunHill, teaching English through drama.

The children come from a multi ethnical background and learn confidence and pick up English and social skills through a fun-filled weekly meeting in the church hall, jointly led by Lesley Lucas of St. Ninian’s and Lorraine McHendry of GoFunHill.
