A small group of researchers based at the University of Stirling (Dr Alison Jasper; Dr Michael Marten; Dr Rajalaksmi Nadadur Kannan) are researching women who were involved in the missionary work of the Scottish Episcopal Church and the Church of Scotland in the first half of the 20th century, or in the work of fund-raising for this. They would be very interested in any memories, records or memorabilia people or churches may have.
During this period, the SEC sent missionaries to Africa (Kaffraria, Province of South Africa) and India (Chanda, Nagpur Diocese) and supported priests in British Columbia, Canada and there was a central coordinating committee for support – The Church Women’s Association (CWA) – based in Edinburgh. The parishes at home were very much involved in raising money and, in the earlier period, in making clothes to send to the mission field, so it is possible that some SEC parishes might have records relating to this work or that some people may even remember something themselves.
If you have any recollections or knowledge of this activity relating to women in the Scottish Episcopal Church in particular, please contact Alison Jasper, e-mail: a.e.jasper@stir.ac.uk tel: 01786 467968 or write to her at: School of Arts & Humanities: Religion, University of Stirling, Stirling. The research team have recently set up a range of electronic means of communication and dissemination about the broader project (including the Church of Scotland) that you might also like to visit.
